I keep coming across designers from my hometown or province who have moved to NY for fashion school and have since made it. It’s like the universe is telling me something. Or something. Anyway, today’s local-grown find is one Sid Neigum, found via a great feature in a local magazine, Avenue. After studying sciences in my fair city (…and getting a gun pulled on him – ah, YEG), Sid moved to NY and graduated from FIT, and has since quite deservedly won a couple of emerging designer awards and shown his most recent collection at Toronto Fashion Week. My first response to his F/W 14 collection (seen above) was that it is very reminiscent of Gareth Pugh’s aesthetic. But after a closer look at it and his earlier collections (S/S 14, A/W 13, and S/S 13, seen below), I don’t think it’s fair to label it with anyone else’s name. At any rate, whatever Sid’s creations remind me of, it definitely isn’t my home (thank goodness for that – this place is in danger of becoming an artistic wasteland). Sid, you have given me hope.
